Co-location
Sorry for the jargon, but Co-location is a simply an industry term for a dedicated server which is located in one of our computer rooms. The most common use for such a server is to host a client's website and associated databases.
There are four reasons why customers choose to move to a dedicated server with us. These are:
- They require a server with a high level of service and a SLA
- They may be generating a lot of traffic on the Internet and require a dedicated bandwith
- Their website may place a particularly heavy load on the processing capability of the server, which would adversely affect other users of a shared server
- For special security reasons they need to be on a dedicated server. The web site might be processing sensitive data (credit cards, confidential data, etc.) and increased security can be given for co-located servers
Many web development companies also prefer to place a server with us to provide the hosting for their customers. They gain the advantage of our resilience, our 24 hour manned support and expertise in running servers, and are left free to concentrate on their skills.
When some customers start to think about a having a dedicated server, they understandably often consider locating the server in their own office and putting in a permanent Internet connection.
Here are the three most common reasons why most reject this idea:
- Cost Effective - Permanent Internet connections are more expensive than co-location.
- Service - Office based servers cannot provide the necessary resilience and service backup. If your leased line or equipment fails (and they do) then your web site is also failing, as its not available. With Colloquium based servers there's the resilience and backup, if required, to provide continuous uninterrupted service.
- Expertise - even if you have the expertise to look after the server and handle the inevitable hacking attacks, are your staff available 24 hours a day, 365 days as a year, like Colloquium's on-site specialists.
Pricing for co-location is bespoke, but starts at £100 per month and ranges upwards depending upon the service. What determines the price are bandwidth requirement, rack space, service cover and support. Don't worry about these if you haven't thought about them or got the exact figures to hand, we are used to assisting customers to get to grips with co-location and can be flexible with pricing to suit your needs.
